How to Prepare for a Successful Teletherapy Session
Your child's teletherapy session can be both productive and fun with a few simple preparations. Here's how you can help set the stage for success:
1. Create a Distraction-Free Space
It’s important that your child is in a quiet, calm area, free from distractions like siblings, pets, or TV. Not only do distractions pull their focus away from the session, but busy environments can also overwhelm their sensory systems, especially when concentration is key. A quiet space helps them feel more comfortable and able to engage fully.
2. Gather Supplies in Advance
Prepare a kit with basic supplies like pencils, crayons, colored pencils, glue, scissors, and paper. If worksheets are needed, I will send them in advance so you can print them out. Having everything ready means we can dive into therapy right on time!
3. Optimize Lighting and Background
A well-lit room makes a big difference in virtual therapy. Good lighting allows me to see your child’s movements and responses clearly, ensuring accurate guidance. Also, make sure any virtual backgrounds are turned off, as these can interfere with my ability to see your child’s work.
4. Check the Camera
A working camera is essential for our session! Ideally, have one camera focused on your child’s face for communication and, if possible, another camera focused on their hands. This dual-camera setup allows me to see both their expressions and their fine motor movements, leading to more effective therapy.
5. Relax!
Most importantly, don’t stress. Teletherapy is designed to be flexible and fun. I encourage children to explore tasks, even if they’ve found them tricky in the past. Therapy at School Skills & Beyond is all about working together and celebrating small wins along the way.
By following these tips, your child will be set up for a great session, and together, we can ensure they make progress while enjoying the process.
